Inexperience
Let's face it, Wasilla and Alaska do not have the complexities of most other locations. A Mayorship and short term Gubernatorialship that were very narrowly focused did not prepare Sarah Palin for the demands and expectations of a national candidacy. Her disinterest in learning compounded the situation. Appealing to the popular opinions is not a responsible way to manage or govern.
The Truth:
There's always been an anti-intellectual streak, actually in both parties, the populism of both parties. Sarah Palin seemed-but lots of times the candidates are faking it. They're actually quite intelligent and have gone to Ivy League universities and a whole bunch of other things. Sort of they fake it.
But Sarah Palin seems genuinely committed to knowing as little as possible.
