Suspending the Gasoline Tax

Suspending the 18.4 cent federal gas tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day was proposed. At best, drivers would get a meager 5% break on summer gas costs, worth less than one tank of gas. The idea would do nothing to address the supply-demand imbalance, and it would drain an estimated $10 billion from the fund that pays for roads and highways.

"I think it would be disingenuous and unfortunate for American consumers … to believe that there is a short-term fix," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Monday. "There's not going to be one."

RESULT: Alaska gas prices remain the highest in the nation.
